Reflections of a Psychologist on the Coronial Inquest on Charmaine Dragun
The APS Sydney Branch invites you to an evening seminar with
Dr Belinda Khong
In March 2010, a coronial inquest examined the tragic suicide of newsreader Charmaine Dragun. The case attracted significant publicity. The coroner delivered his decision in October, recommending that his findings be brought to the attention of peak bodies, including the APS. The recommendations included certain procedures in the assessment and treatment of depression and bipolar disorder, ultimately to reduce the incidence of suicidal behaviour. Dr Belinda Khong was the treating psychologist who gave evidence at the inquest over 3 days. Belinda has agreed to give an account of her experience of the inquest, and to discuss the implications for treating practitioners. The evening will conclude with opportunity for questions and comments. A summary representation of members’ views will be fed back to APS National Office. Sydney Branch welcomes Belinda’s offer to present to members on this sensitive event which has raised questions of crucial significance to the profession.
