Exploring Love, Compassion, Equanimity and Emphatic Joy (Brahma-Viharas) and its Near and Far Enemies

The four positive emotions or virtues of love, compassion, equanimity and emphatic joy are desirable states, thoughts, and actions to be cultivated in meditation. The cultivation of these states improves our quality of life, and our relationship with others. and provides a strong foundation for mindful living. Each of the four states has a “near enemy,” a mental state often mistaken for the positive emotion, and a “far enemy,” a mental state that is contrary to the positive emotion. An example is the positive emotion of compassion with its near enemy of pity and its far enemy of cruelty. The talk will explore the four positive emotions and what is involved in cultivating and embodying them in our practices, and how we can distinguish them from their near and far enemies.
